Jacaranda Dreaming, Acrylic Painting by Chris Marshall, Perth WA

I started this painting when doing an artist-in-residence roster, twirling an amazing, curly jacaranda seed pod with the fingers of my left hand and quickly drawing with watery acrylic paint with my right hand. Alternative titles "Jacaranda Seedpods" or "Dance of the Seedpods"

This painting has always had a coastal feel and I've worked on it all 4 ways. It has gradually developed more of a watery feel with a series of rockpools. It could be hung any way up but I've settled on this orientation - there are 2 hangers on it though!

I'm fascinated by Salt Lakes. Many people would think they were boring but I see them as having a harsh beauty with wonderful lights on them at dawn and dusk. But many of them were not always salt lakes, they've become like that over time with over clearing and drought. I often wonder about their history and the stories they could tell... .

Earthcare, Acrylic painting by Chris Marshall, Perth WA

SOLD

This is a caring sort of ashes to ashes, dust to dust type painting representing the continuation of life - someone, something dies and mother nature plants another in a peaceful, timeless way .... we all must look after the earth, our one and only planet, to enable mother nature to continue her work.

I've always loved nature and am very into saving the planet so this artwork combines the two. I'm recycling my Mum's old kitchen curtains as part of the ground -they turn up all over the place as they make such interesting textures and I didn't want to send them to landfill.

Gaia (Mother Nature or Mother Earth) is everywhere, patiently and tirelessly adapting and healing the earth after endless natural catastrophes and other thoughtless, manmade problems. (Just look at the rebirth of bright green little shoots so soon after major bush fires). So whatever knotty problems we throw at her, Gaia is constantly working to make sure there is always some little thing that is bright and colourful growing. By connecting with nature and becoming more respectful and aware of where Gaia needs our help, we can feed our own souls and feel more alive. In other words, by nurturing nature we are really nurturing ourselves. How cool is that?

Papery Bracts, Mixed Media / Collage by Chris Marshall, Perth WA

Did you know that all bougainvillea flowers are white? They are the lbits right inside what you think is the flower. The gorgeous bright colours that make the bougainvilleas stand out are really "papery bracts". Once I found that phrase, I just couldn't get it out of my head, so this artwork is the cure!.

This painting started with some markmaking in a landscape format and, although I worked on it from all 4 directions I was expecting it to stay that way round. But ...late one night I was sitting on the floor really staring at it and it was this way up. As I stared this small circle appeared in the bottom left corner and slowly it grew and grew and grew and clearly insisted on being a large, green sad face called "I Weep for the Forest" so it was my job to make that happen. It was an absolutely mindblowing moment which I have never forgotten. I have hung on to this painting for many years as it holds such a powerful message for me

This started life as a scribbly pen drawing on litho paper. I then tore up the drawing and it ended up on a series of 7 small canvases just called "Little Bits of Fun". I am now revisiting these bits of fun and creating new standalone artworks. This is the first one - it told me it wanted to be called "The Melt" so I had to work to this title!.

It was cold and wet one Winter's day so I cheered myself up by having fun creating some early layers, pure abstract marks over collage elements and watching paint dry. (bliss!).
A couple of days later when I went into the studio the sun had come out - It's amazing what a difference the sun makes to your mood and to your palette! All those yellows just took over! To me the painting now feels sunny and sort of happy, outdoorsy, connecting with nature...
