Deluge, mixed media/collage artwork by Chris Marshall, Perth
This artwork was created for an exhibition with a water theme. Starting from colour and texture, the early layers of the painting seemed to feel like peering through sheets of water. It wanted to be called "Deluge" or "Then Came the Rain" so I set out to make it feel more like that..I wanted to give the impression of the power of water rushing and bouncing all over the place, carrying all sorts of debris and reshaping the landscape in its path.. Inspired by the huge tides and erosion of soft rock we've seen in the Kimberley. These different rocks show you glimpses into other time periods like the black volcanic rocks covered at high tide with the tangle of mangroves over them (from the lush forests of the age of the dinosaurs). I'm always fascinated by evidence of what I call "landscapes being born"

After drought-breaking rains the country looks magnificent with water in rivers, waterfalls cascading and the first signs of the bright, bright green tinge of new growth. The fast flowing, swirling water from violent storms has often reshaped the landscape leaving debris and carving new paths but soon the parched land will teem with new life.

Sculpted by Nature - Tidal Movements, mixed media painting by Chris Marshall
This painting was inspired by the wonderful rock formations of the North West of Western Australia. The coloured stripes, the strength and solidity of the rock itself transformed into organic shapes by the forces of nature - time, tide, weather .... this represents the concept of nature being a sculptor, the sheer power of water rushing through every gap it can find in the rocks recarving the shapes twice a day at high tide.. This artwork is an interpretation of the constant sculpting and resculpting of coastal landforms by the action of waves reaching up then gradually dropping back, creating amazing shapes which reach into every nook and cranny, carrying away debris each time.
